Turkey’s first warship arrives in Mogadishu Port under defense deal

Tuesday 23, April 2024 {HMC} A Turkish warship named Kemalreis will dock today at the port of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, as this action is part of a defense cooperation agreement recently signed between Ankara and Mogadishu.

It is expected that the leaders of the Somali government will meet units of the Turkish Navy when the warship docks in the port of Mogadishu, which will be the first step in the implementation of the agreement signed last February.

There has been a pause in the work of the port of Mogadishu as President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is expected to participate in the ceremony of welcoming the ship in the sea of Somalia.

According to the agreement signed by their defense ministers and approved in February by the Somali Parliament, Turkey will provide training and equipment to the Somali Navy, allowing Somalia to protect its maritime resources and prevent terrorism, piracy, and interference by strangers.

The agreement will also enhance economic development and trade relations between the two countries, as Turkey will help Somalia to take advantage of its vast potential in fishing, tourism, and energy.
